Why Faith, Values and Vision are More Important Than Goals for Success and Happiness

Do you know what the problem with "goals" are ? Once you've completed them, you have to set more! It's a short-term high that ultimately leaves you unfulfilled. Worse yet, the goal itself is often not enough motivation to allow you to complete the goal!

Ultimately you need a higher purpose or vision that you are aiming for.  And I'm not necessarily talking in a religious sense. A worker toils not to just complete the job at hand, but because the work put into the current task represents a step on a larger journey to a greater end. Be it pride in being a professional, hope for a better future, or proving the doubters wrong.

The goal of completing a single class will not motivate you to stop procrastinating on that report, but the dream of graduating, earning a career in your chosen field and living the life you want will.

It's this VISION of who we want to be in the future that motivates us to do the small tedious work right in front of is... It's your "WHY".

Maybe you're NOT lazy... You just haven't found a strong enough WHY yet...

Even visions can be realized, then what ?

You continue to strive towards your VALUES. For they never change, but can be lived every day.

Truth and Justice
Honest work
Free Creativity
Altruism
Self Actualisation

Or whatever you so choose. These values can help you create new VISIONS for the future.

The FAITH in your VISION gives you the short-term WILL to take care of the grunt work of the individual GOALS on your way to the next VISION. The next best version of yourself and your life.

So Remember the hierarchy of:
VALUES / VISIONS / GOALS / TASKS

The motivation for the work (TASKS and GOALS) comes from the VALUES and VISIONS you create for yourself.

Is Moving Away From Pain or Moving Towards Pleasure Greater Motivation ?

I believe BOTH can be equally motivating. Problem is, most of us are stuck somewhat top-dead center, so we have little motivation to change.

We have just enough creature comforts, social outlets and distractions that we are content. We fail to dream big, because hey, for the most part, we've already got it pretty good.

We have enough of a subsistence income that we aren't hungry or homeless. We don't live in fear due to crime or war, life is "good".

So what do we do to really kick us out of middle-class zombie-land and unto bigger and better things?

1. Challenge Yourself - Do HARD things just because. Discipline your self discipline.

2. Find examples of people living extraordinary, actualized lives (not reality show stars, but real people). They walk among us, open your eyes.

3. Turn off the media - On your next vacation ... Try a blackout of Internet, TV and Radio for a week. Find yourself, understand what you are really about and what you want to do. You'll find your center when the constant bombardment of advertising is quieted for a while.

4. Take risks. Put yourself in situations where you HAVE to succeed to survive. Make stretch goals, push yourself. This makes you motivated by both PAIN and PLEASURE. If you set up all your personal goals to where "Good Enough" is a win, you'll wallow in mediocrity forever.

Are you living? Or just alive?

Nobody's Going to "Steal Your Stuff" and How to Make a Real "To-Do" List

It's a huge myth that people are going to "steal your ideas", even technical concepts or songs... However, this notion is used often as an excuse for people not to go forward and start working creatively.

If you actually get enough exposure with your creative work that people are using using your ideas,  that's good! It demonstrates you're making an impact!  You can always create new material... No one creation should make or break you. If that's the case, maybe you're not there yet.

Never get hung up on those type of details at the expense of moving forward.

The actions you know that are a lot of work or that you fear are the ones you procrastinate on (like actually producing and distributing your creative output). So you've gotta jump on those first and GET THEM DONE!

I know myself too well - I'll find any distraction to avoid the truly difficult tasks.
But I know that I will never have the life I want if I don't break that routine.

It's a primary key to success : What you fear and procrastinate on are virtually ALWAYS the actions you need to get DONE the MOST!

The awesome news is that ACTION CONQUERS FEAR!  Once you knock out that hard stuff it gives you incredible momentum... THEN you can go mop up the details.

You may see a lot of people that do a lot of work and are "busy" but never get anywhere because they don't focus the important, but scary things that really would gain them ground - It's self delusion really - I've certainly been guilty of it... Stop fooling yourself ... BUSYWORK can be a distraction and avoidance mechanism.

The most important thing you can do daily, is make your to-do list for the next day . And I'm talking the REAL to-do's ... The stuff you want to put off but you know will have great payback for you. So 1, 2 or 3 high impact actions.

I know that you know what those are for yourself. Make it a habit to start each day tackling the big scary monsters head-on and you're going to see RESULTS.
